Repairing Older Tile Roofs
Older terracotta and concrete tiles can become brittle, so walking on them and replacing them takes care. Some older tile profiles are no longer made.
We source matching second-hand tiles where possible, or move sound tiles from less visible areas so repairs blend in. If the roof is past restoring, we'll tell you honestly.
Ridge Capping Rebedding and Repointing
Ridge caps sit on a bed of mortar and are sealed with pointing. Over time, sun and movement crack the pointing, and on older roofs the bedding underneath breaks down too. That's when ridge caps loosen and water gets in along the ridges and hips.
Where only the top layer has failed, we repoint with flexible pointing that moves with the roof. Where the bedding has crumbled, we lift the caps, rebed them and repoint. Either way, the caps end up secure and sealed.
Signs Your Roof Is Ready for Restoration
Fading or patchy colour, lichen across large areas, tiles that stay dark long after rain and cracked pointing on most ridges all mean the surface has worn out.
At that stage, repairing one spot at a time costs more over the years than restoring the whole roof once. If the tiles and battens are still sound, restoration is usually the best-value option.
